What does it mean when clean-edged cracks appear suddenly?
In short: Cracks with sharp, clean faces and no dirt, paint or caulk inside them are new. When several appear at once, the timing points toward a sudden cause, such as an earthquake, nearby blasting or an impact, rather than the slow, seasonal movement of clay soil. Recording exactly when they appeared is the most useful thing a homeowner can do.
What does a "fresh" crack look like?
- Crack faces are sharp and bright, with no rounding.
- No dust, cobwebs or debris inside the crack.
- No paint, caulk or patching compound bridging it.
- Drywall paper or tape is freshly torn rather than yellowed.
- Earlier photos of the same wall show no crack.
Older cracks tend to collect dirt, get painted over, and show edges worn by repeated opening and closing.
What causes can it point to?
| Cause | Notes |
|---|---|
| Earthquake shaking damage | Cracks appear together right after a felt earthquake |
| Vibration-related cracking | Near blasting, pile driving or heavy equipment; may extend existing cracks |
| Impact | A vehicle, falling tree or heavy object striking the structure |
Earthquakes in Oklahoma
Oklahoma averaged about two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or larger per year before 2009; there were 579 in 2014 and 903 in 2015 1. Larger events include the magnitude 5.7 Prague earthquake in November 2011, the magnitude 5.8 Pawnee earthquake in September 2016 and the magnitude 5.0 Cushing earthquake in November 2016 1. Researchers describe a scientific consensus that wastewater disposal has induced earthquakes in Oklahoma since at least 2010 1. Before that increase, the Oklahoma Geological Survey described four main seismic areas: El Reno-Mustang, central Oklahoma, Love and Carter counties, and the Arkoma Basin 2. See induced seismicity in Oklahoma and earthquakes, claims and law.
Vibration
The U.S. Geological Survey lists artificial vibration among the human causes of landslides 3, which shows that vibration can affect ground as well as buildings. For houses, the evidence is usually the timing of the cracks against records of the vibration source.
How does it differ from soil-movement cracks?
Expansive clay moves on a seasonal cycle. Texas monitoring found slabs settling through the growing season and partly recovering in winter 4, so cracks from soil movement tend to grow, open and close over months. On shrinkable clay, cracks typically need about 5 to 10 millimeters of movement before they appear 5, which means a soil crack can also seem to appear suddenly once that threshold is passed. A single new crack is weaker evidence than a group of new cracks that all appeared at the same time.
| Clue | Sudden event | Soil movement |
|---|---|---|
| Number appearing at once | Many, in different rooms | Usually one area at a time |
| Edges | Fresh and clean | Often weathered or painted |
| Seasonal change | None | Settles in the growing season, partly recovers in winter 4 |
| Floor tilt on survey | Unchanged | Measurable low side |

How should it be documented?
- Write down the date and time the cracks were first noticed, and anything that happened just before (a felt earthquake, blasting, a storm).
- Take close-up photos of each crack with a ruler or coin for scale, showing the clean faces.
- Photograph wider views so each crack's location is clear.
- Find older photos of the same walls for comparison.
- Have a floor elevation survey done to check whether the foundation has tilted.
Home inspection standards list drywall cracks, brick cracks, out-of-square door frames and uneven floors as signs of possible foundation movement 6.

Common questions
What does a fresh, clean crack mean?
A crack with sharp faces and no dirt, paint or caulk inside it is recent. When several appear at the same time, that supports a sudden cause such as an earthquake or impact rather than slow soil movement.
How do I tell an old crack from a new one?
Old cracks usually have rounded or dirty edges, dust or debris inside, paint or caulk bridging them, or a history in earlier photos. New cracks have bright, sharp faces and no coating inside.
Could an Oklahoma earthquake have cracked my house?
Oklahoma has had many felt earthquakes since 2009, including magnitude 5.7, 5.8 and 5.0 events in 2011 and 2016. Matching the date the cracks appeared with the earthquake record is the first step.
Can soil movement cause sudden cracks?
Sometimes. Expansive clay usually moves gradually, but on clay a crack typically needs about 5 to 10 millimeters of movement before it shows, so it can seem to appear all at once; that is why the overall pattern of cracks and floor levels still needs checking.
